Don't compare yourself to others!

Welcome to another instalment of "What have you learned?" This time I wanna talk about comparing yourself to other people.

Don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone’s journey is different. My mother agent always tells us this. She says, “There’s absolutely no point in you guys comparing yourselves with each other, you’re all beautiful, you’re all amazing, you’ll all go far – it’ll just be at different times and for different reasons.” I’m obviously paraphrasing there, but that’s the gist of a bunch of conversations we’ve had over the years.

This really taught me instead, to study the people I was envious of. Instead of being jealous and thinking, “Damn, she’s lucky! That’s where I wanna be!” It’s more practical to think, “Okay, wow she’s clearly doing amazing. I wonder how she got there, I wonder what I can do to get there too.” Instead of using someone’s success to be bitter, or bring yourself down, use them as inspiration to make yourself better.

Of course that's easier said than done. The first thing you do, when you see someone who's doing amazingly in life.. is automatically think, "Damn..they're doing so much better than me." STOP RIGHT THERE. Change your thought-process immediately.

BE BETTER NOT BITTER! Find inspiration in other people and learn from them. There’s no use in getting jealous, or trying to be better than anyone else, just try to be better than the last version of yourself. There’s enough room in this world for everyone to be great, there’s really no need for competition.

Fitness: Isometrics

Hey guys! I’m constantly asked about how/where I workout, so I figured I’d do a post about some of the workouts I like and where you can do them! If you don’t live in any of the cities I mention, I recommend googling these classes, and I’m sure you’ll find something similar near you!

America vs Canada

Hey guys! Yesterday was a super busy day for me, and I forgot to do this post - so here it is! I just want to reiterate again, I'm not trying to offend anyone. I'm just giving my opinion, and these are opinions that many Americans hold as well. I hope you can understand where I'm coming! Go ahead and check it out :)

Palm Springs x Aerie

Hey dolls,
I recently went to Palm Springs to shoot a campaign for Aerie! I was so excited because I've never been there before. Naturally, I took tonnes of pictures and figured I'd share them with you all. We stayed at The Parker hotel, and it was incredible. If you're ever planning on visiting Palm Springs, I seriously recommend staying there! I vlogged a bit during this trip as well - so be sure to look out for those blogs on my channel really soon. We shot at 3 locations, the Saguaro hotel and 2 stunning houses. Be sure to check out the vlogs for a better look at the locations. Enjoy!

I gave up eggs!

Have you had a chance to check out my latest video? It just went up! Click HERE to watch! Also I
just wanted to mention, I made this video before I had got my new camera - so I apologize for the crap quality! I got my new camera after I decided I'd do a big relaunch, so some of the videos I'll be posting were filmed a while ago. But after that, they'll all be great quality, I promise!

Hope you enjoy xx

Snapchat Challenge!

Hey everyone! I thought I'd make a post about something I've been doing for a while now. My friend Jess Clements and I decided we wanted to be really healthy this year. Part of being healthy is staying accountable. It's quite easy to fall off track when you're on your own.

So we thought, we don't we use snapchat, and send pictures of everything we eat to each other. Then we thought we should go one-up and snap all of our food to everyone! It's turning out amazingly. So many people have joined us in posting all of their meals, and sending us their pics too!

Here's some examples of what I post..

It's really that simple. It makes me think to myself, "Should I make a grilled cheese? Or a salad? Well, I'm gonna end up posting this, and I'm supposed to be eating healthier, so salad it is". That has become my thought process, because now I have all these people to whom I'm remaining accountable.

That doesn't mean I never cheat. If I want a slice of pizza one day, or some cake, I have it. But this definitely makes me rethink how frequently I'll have a cheat meal. You know what I mean?

If you'd like to join us add me on snapchat: @liveshiv (Jess - @jclem43)

I've also been getting a lot of healthy tips from people, so keep those comin' my way!

Happy eating everyone!

Don't doubt yourself!

Don’t doubt yourself.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from modeling, it’s this - Don’t doubt yourself.  I’ve always dreamed of getting this far, but I never actually believed I could do it until the opportunities started showing themselves. Then I started to think…”Wow, this could actually be a reality for me!”

There were things I thought would be impossible to overcome, especially in this industry. For example I knew I was considered a “short” model, at only 5’8”, when most girls are 5’9” and up. What was I supposed to do? Make myself grow? I knew that would prevent me from doing certain jobs and I allowed myself to be put in a box.

Then I did London Fashion Week.

And then I started booking some random magazine editorials. And then it hit me: most of these girls are taller than me, but I’m still booking the same jobs as them, so why did I ever doubt myself because of my height? If I had just believed in the beginning that my height wasn’t a barrier to my success, maybe I would’ve done even more shows, maybe I would have booked even more editorial jobs by now!

So now, that’s the attitude I have. It doesn’t matter that I’m a minority, a darker skinned short girl. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that; I now know that girls like me can work in any part of this industry if they want to. I can break barriers and work hard and make it happen. Instead of doubting myself, I’ve learned to not allow doubt to even enter my mind. This industry is filled with endless opportunity, as is the rest of the world.

If you don’t book a job, it’s not for you – that’s it, done, on to the next one.

Don’t doubt yourself or your abilities. Maybe if I hadn’t doubted myself earlier on, I’d be further now. This industry has taught me that things can change in the blink of an eye, and if you’re ready, it’ll be for the better. So instead of doubting yourself, set the bar high – you never know, you may even reach beyond it.

Here's a recap..
1. Don't put yourself in a box.
2. Stop doubting by believing.
3. Move on.
4. Set the bar high.

The new schedule..

Are you ready? We’re about to take this bitch into overdrive.

HEY DOLLS! I’m so excited to finally be launching my blog to it’s full potential. I’ve been working on so much content and I can’t wait to share it!

I hope you enjoyed my last two posts about the New Year and resolutions. I strongly believe in writing your goals down and putting them into the universe. So let’s all do that together this year.

As you know, one of my goals is getting this blog established. I wanted to write this as a bit of a teaser post as to what you can expect to see in the coming months.

I’ve created a new schedule. And I’m putting it out there so I have to stick to it. From now on you can expect blog posts every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. And a youtube video every Thursday! That’s three blog posts and one video every week!

So mark your calendars people - it's on!

My New Year's Resolutions!

Hey dolls! As promised, here’s a post with my New Year’s resolutions for 2016! I’ve been thinking about them for a while, and I followed my tips on how to write them so now they’re ready. I know that a lot of people think resolutions are corny, or pointless – but in my life, I’ve always found that writing out my goals help. So, what better time to start than the beginning of the year? Here goes..
  1.  1.     I’d really like to focus more on boxing. I’d like to meet with my trainer once a week for a one-on-one session and take at least one class at aerospace 6 days a week. When I’m not in NYC, I want to make sure I do 20 minutes of jump rope and 20 minutes of exercises every day, no matter where I am.
  2. 2.     In 2016, I really want to try to do more touristy things in the cities I live in. My excuse is always that I’m too tired to explore, or that I don’t know anyone willing to do tourist things with me. Then I realized… I live in New York City and I haven’t even been to the Statue of Liberty, or MoMA, or the Rockafeller Centre. I mean come on… So this year, even if I’m on my own, I will go to at least one tourist attraction each month in New York City.
  3. 3.     In terms of modeling, I’m really happy with the way my career is going. I have great agencies and I’m working with companies I’ve never dreamed I could work with. But it’s important to always think forward and push yourself to the next level. Next year, I’d like to solidify my regular ecommerce clients and book 5 major campaigns.
  4. 4.     Work on being vegan. I’ve been slowly making this transition, so my goal for 2016 is to completely remove dairy (yes, that means cheese too). This doesn’t need to be done at a specific time in the year, it can be done gradually – but you gotta do it!
  5. 5.     My dream for 2016 would be to get this blog established. I also want to focus quite heavily on Youtube and get the “liveshiv” brand more out there. I have so many goals for my brand, so many things I want to share, and so much to learn. I want to get my brand to be consistent and something of substance that people enjoy being a part of.

So there we go, that’s it!  I’ve put these out into the world, so now I have to remain accountable. If you have any resolutions feel free to send them to me, and we can keep track of them together! I’m very interactive with people on my snapchat (liveshiv) so feel free to add me on there and let’s reach some goals! Or if you don’t have snapchat, definitely leave a comment below. I look forward to hearing your resolutions! J

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hey all! I’m not sure you noticed, but I haven’t been around for a while. I’ve been posting inconsistently on YouTube, but I recently decided to take the reigns, and do a full blog relaunch! So I’ll be relaunching my blog and YouTube channel on JANUARY 4th! I’m super excited to share all of this new content with you all. It’s gonna be a great year.

Speaking of next year, since it’s January 1st – I thought I would do a post on New Year’s Resolutions. But this isn’t going to be your typical post. I’ve found over the years, that writing things down really helps. There’s also some other tips to making New Year’s resolutions (or just goals in general), that I’ve discovered – and I’m going to share them with you :)

  • 1.     Only make about 5 resolutions. You’ve got to be realistic and logical – the chances of accomplishing and focusing on 10-15 resolutions is small. Instead, make 5 tangible goals on which you’ll be able to dedicate significant time.
  • 2.     Be specific. For example, don’t just write: “Workout more”. Instead, quantify your goals: “Go to the gym 3 times a week, working in 30 minutes of cardio and changing target exercises each session.”
  • 3.     Write them down. I’ve found that physically writing out my goals has always helped me. I feel like that way, they’re out into the world and out of my head so instead of thinking about them, I can move onto making them a reality.
  • 4.     Put them somewhere you can see. I tend to write my goals or resolutions somewhere where I’ll constantly see them. Whether it’s a notebook I use a lot, or my agenda – I want to make sure I see them all the time. It’s a constant reminder of what you’re working towards, and what you need to do to get there.
  • 5.     Look at examples. This may seem nerdy, but I swear it helps! Sometimes it’s hard to get your thoughts into words. Looking at examples will help you see how others have done it – and it might also help give you some new ideas!

I hope these tips help! In a couple days I’ll share my new year’s resolutions, and we can keep track of them together. I’ll also be letting you know what my new posting schedule is, and lots of new exciting stuff that’s happening! Stay tuned my loves.
